Ethical Metalsmiths’ mission is to inspire responsible jewelry practices through education, connection and action.  Ethical Metalsmiths (EM) is a non-profit organization based in the United States and is registered as a 501(c)(3).

The jewelry supply chain is extraordinarily complex, involving dozens of countries with varying laws, business standards and labor practices. EM does not set out to create one model to which all members must adhere; rather, it seeks to educate, inform and help support replicable best practice models.

EM supplies self-assessment forms to its members, and members may disclose the results of those assessments online.  EM encourages, but does not require, independent third-party audits of its members.

Members of EM, which range from independent designers to publicly-traded global enterprises, join EM with the goal of exchanging information and ideas and creating replicable models to improve conditions along the jewelry supply chain.  This includes, but is not limited to, disseminating information about known suppliers of gemstones, metals, and other materials.

EM reserves the right to deny or cancel membership to individuals, groups, or companies that do not advance our mission and our goals.
